“The bourgeoisie in the mass,” he wrote in 1905, “will inevitably turn towards the counter-revolution, towards the autocracy, against the revolution, and against the people, as soon as its narrow, selfish interests are met, as soon as it ‘recoils’ from consistent democracy
Those were The words of lenin as written by the father of international revolution: leon Trotsky
The question here however is: how does turn of the century Marxist socialist revolts differ from today?
Well the obvious answer is that they are not Marxist but rather just anti capitalist.
But there is more.. Ever since the fall of the USSR and the American hegemony extended all the way to the streets of Baghdad. The world has began to understand that the neo liberal economic polices that were implemented or forced by the American government on foreign nations were not in their best interest. And didn’t produce models like in japan and Germany after the end of the second world war .
In fact it created a super wealthy class and pushed the majority of the masses into dire poverty.
Egypt would be a suitable example
This poverty or frustration has caused an organic , righteous revolt to overthrow brutal dictators. It happened first in eastern Europe and then in Latin America.. And finally in the arab world.
Across the spectrum, people realized that commonalities between them and governments were unable to stop the mobilization of the masses in peaceful protests.
But that’s all and well for the rest of the world,
but what brings the revolt to wall street?
The Answer could be a multiple of reasons but the most upfront one would be that the youth on the streets demand a change of the class of leadership.
I don’t mean here republican or democrats or one over the other. But actually to let go with both of them.
The hierarchy of those two parties understand that and along with the new kid on the block: the tea party have put fierce resistance against it ( republicans and tea) or slightly acknowledged it but didn’t embrace it (democrats)
Essentially this is a threat not just to them.. But the way politics is done in this country… Also it shows something more alarming and that is a growing shift of ideology in this country.
A new ideology that wants more economic equality, that believes “laissez faire” should not be allowed to run wild and that the rich ,should if they choose to want to be rich in this country, not hoard all the wealth of the nation
Notice that we are not against anyone being better off, what we are against is the current captial means of production.
The model as it is now teaches us that as the capitalist earn more money , more jobs are created , more money is spent and everyone is better off.
(This trickle down economics )
That holds to be false. Companies since the 08 crash have reported record profits yet unemployment still roams around 9.1 %.
There has not been much new job creation as companies still favor temp or part time hires to keep profits high while exploiting the fact that workers at this time will take anything that comes their way so they can live
These realities brought the young, the old, and the unemployed to liberty plaza on wall ST. They are the same conditions that brought the serfs and the factory workers out during the bloshvik revolt
The ideologies changed , the people changed but the oppression and the resistance remained universal
I think Trotsky would agree
